The whole reason I signed up for the course was to make a light for my bedroom, which has a vaulted ceiling and needs a big light. I loved Jenny Crisps lampshades that I saw at Pensons restaurant near Tenbury Wells. I thought that they would be so expensive that I might as well do a course and learn how to weave well enough to make my own willow lampshade instead, which I have now done!
Rope weave lampshade
The basket needs to fit the 25cm lighting utility ring to fit the light in. I will set the base on my 45cm border board.

I used willow in my final design, buff and mixed colours left over from the Traditional Basket unit.
I did design work on my iPad and laptop and used basket making tools.
I love rope weave and wanted to incorporate it into my final piece. I made the lampshade on a border practice board and a lighting utility ring, which I secured into the piece using a 3 rod wale. It's quite like a lobster pot and has a rough and ready feel to it. The voids and texture work well in a lampshade.
The hardest part of the technique was pulling the lampshade into the bell shape, which I did using rings and a plant pot water tray to shape it as I wove.
